So does sugar actually feed cancer?

Does sugar feed cancer?
Well the answer is, yes, no and maybe.
And I’ll explain what I mean in just a moment.

So does sugar feed cancer?
So I disappeared down a rabbit hole looking for an answer to this question.
There’s so much information out there.
All the way from the extreme of “Yes. Sugar causes cancer, feeds cancer, it’s terrible, stay away from it!” and the other end is “No, sugar’s completely safe, your body needs it, you must eat it!”
But that doesn’t help.
Neither of those responses helps because how do we use that?
So I wanted to find a better answer for you.
And I found some interesting research along the way.
What the science says
Foods that spike your blood sugar levels promote cancer
The first lot of research that I found was that foods with a high glycaemic load – so they create a high spike in your blood sugar levels after you eat them – have been associated with both an increased risk of certain types of cancer, up to fifty percent higher in some cases, and also with poorer survival rates after treatment with chemotherapy.
So eating foods that spike your blood sugar levels have been associated with increased risk of cancer and poorer survival outcomes.
Drinking soft drink ages your cells and makes them more likely to turn cancerous
The next piece of research was about drinking soft drink and that drinking soft drink on a daily basis actually shortened the telomeres in cells.
What are telomeres? They’re the ends of your chromosomes and the shorter your telomeres the higher the risk that that cell is going to turn into a cancerous cell.
So drinking sugar shortens your telomeres which increases the risk of cancer.
Using more glucose makes cells more cancerous
And the third bit of research showed that allowing cancerous cells to uptake more glucose actually made the cells more cancerous – more disorganized growth and activation of the cancerous metabolic pathways in those cells.
So access to more glucose, using more glucose, makes the cells more cancerous.
So that’s three really interesting pieces of research that shows that sugar does have an effect on the risk of cancer, on the development of cancer, on the growth and spread of cancer, and treatment and recovery from cancer.
So yes, sugar does actually affect cancer cells.
What we know about sugar’s effect on the body
And there are five things that we know about sugar and what effect it has on the body and how it might be, on a broader level, affecting your experience of cancer and your healing.
1. Cancer cells use glucose differently
So cancer cells do have a different metabolic pathway from healthy cells.
They use fuel in a different way, and they use glucose at 10 times or more the rate of healthy cells, so they definitely do use glucose much faster than healthy cells.
So having less of it circulating may actually make it harder for those cancer cells to thrive.
2. Sugar is acidic
Sugar is also an acidic food.
Now whether or not you subscribe to the idea of the alkaline diet and body pH – that’s a topic for a whole other video – sugar does actually create an acidic environment when it breaks down and it can create the conditions that allow cancer to thrive.
Whether that’s through blood pH, whether that’s through inflammation, whatever the mechanism, sugar does contribute to the conditions that can allow cancer to thrive.
3. Sugar suppresses your immune system
Sugar has also been studied to reduce your immune system, to suppress your immune system.
So basically for about 3 or 4 hours after you eat sugar your immune system is less effective.
It can’t respond to foreign bodies and threats and of course your immune system is your primary line of defense against cancer.
So every time you eat sugar you make it less effective, and that effect lasts three, four, five hours.
So if you have sugar at every meal you’re keeping your immune system constantly suppressed, not able to work at optimum efficiency.
4. Sugar raises insulin levels
Sugar also raises insulin levels.
So insulin is something that your body releases in response to an increase in sugar in your body in order to store that sugar away if needed and to make sure that your blood sugar levels come back down to normal.
But insulin also promotes cancer cell growth.
So when you eat sugar your insulin levels go up which then promotes the growth of cancer.
5. Sugar creates obesity
And sugar creates obesity.
That’s an established fact that the more sugar you eat the more likely you are to gain weight.
So it’s also established that obesity is associated with an increased risk of cancer.
So eating sugar creates obesity which increases the risk of cancer.
So that’s five things that we do know about sugar and its association with cancer that might make you want to think twice about including lots of it in your diet.
What to do with all of this information?
So then there are five things that you can do with this information.
1. Reduce the amount of sugar that you eat
The first thing is to actually reduce the amount of refined sugar and carbohydrates that you eat.
Whether that’s white sugar or white bread, any highly refined carbohydrates are very easily absorbed into your system and spike your blood sugar levels.
So reducing those as much as possible is definitely in your best interests.
2. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The second thing is that I wouldn’t go replacing those sugars with artificial sweeteners, because there’s some debate about the risks associated with those artificial sweeteners.
And if you’re trying to heal you don’t want to be bombarding your body with something that it doesn’t really know how to handle and causing other associated problems.
So I’d stay away from those as well.
3. Use natural, less processed sweeteners
There are a number of natural sweeteners that you can use to sweeten foods.
Whether that’s things like maple syrup or agave nectar or dried fruits like dates.
You can use these natural sweeteners to sweeten foods but again they are still sweet, they just also happen to have fibre and minerals that are good for you.
So use them sparingly as well, but use them to make that transition out of the sweeter foods, so at least you’re getting those nutrients and fibre at the same time.
4. Eat sugar with fibre
And the fourth thing that you can do, is that you can eat sugar with fibre which is what I was just saying about the natural sweeteners, particularly dates and things like fruit.
So whole fruit, whole vegetables, whole grains.
They still do contain carbohydrates that are broken into simple sugars to feed your body, but the fibre in those foods slows down how quickly your body can absorb those sugars and it makes it much easier for your body to regulate your blood sugar levels.
And you don’t have those associated problems like the insulin, like the inflammation, all the things that come as a result of those spikes in blood sugar levels.
5. Don’t stress about it!
And the last and most important thing that you can do with this information is don’t stress about it.
Do as much as you can but if you stress yourself you end up creating a lot of the same effects that sugar creates.
So stress suppresses your immune system, raises insulin levels, creates inflammation.
All the same things you’re trying to fix by reducing the amount of sugar you eat.
So by all means do what you can to reduce the sugar that you’re eating, but don’t do it to the point where you start to get stressed because you’ll just undo all your good work.
So that’s a little bit of information about whether or not sugar feeds cancer.
Yes, it does, but there’s more to the story than that.
