The REAL reason behind my short hair

Someone asked me the other day about my short hair.

So I thought it might be fun to clear the air once and for all on that one in case you were wondering about it too.

Hi, I’m Nikki, the Truth Fairy from and I’m here to help you create a life of YOUR choosing.

Important Point #1 – I’ve never had cancer

So the first thing I want to say is that I don’t have cancer, I’ve never been diagnosed with cancer and I’ve never been treated for cancer.

Important Point #2 – I’ve had short hair most of my life

And secondly, apart from a couple of periods in my life I’ve always had short hair.

It seems to suit me and it’s super easy to look after.

Here’s a photo of me from 2011 with my family, wearing my typical pixie haircut.

And another one of me in 2004 just after our first child was born, when I got sick of my hair and decided to hack it all off.

So short hair’s something that I’ve sported for most of my life.

So why did I do it?

But in August last year my husband, Paul, dared me to shave my hair off.

He wanted to see what it looked like and frankly I was getting sick of my hair.

It was short but I was still not wanting to have to deal with it.

So I said what the heck let’s do it.

So we got the clippers out and off came my hair.

And here’s a photo of me mid-shave with a mohawk that Paul did for me.

And what do I think of my shaved head?

So as it turns out I absolutely love having a shaved head.

It is SO easy look after.

I love the way it looks and I love that it’s unconventional because I like doing things a bit differently.

And it makes people stop and think.

And you know maybe in a small way I’m doing my part to make short hair a normal thing for women to do.

So my short hair has absolutely nothing to do with cancer or any other illness for that matter.

I just love wearing it this way.

So now you know.

Your turn

I’d love to hear from you.

Do you have any other questions about my short hair?

Or are there other questions that you’ve really wanted to ask me but you haven’t had the courage to?

Let me know in the comments and I’ll see what I can do for you.

  • Hi Nikki – I LOVE the shorn haircut! I shaved mine off in 2014 (an emotionally-balming decision following dv relationship) and I LOVED it so much. I loved the air and sun getting to my scalp, not having heavy-hairstyle-headaches etc. I’ve got to admit I also loved how scared people became of me – I was at a place where I’d been left feeling weak and vulnerable and powerless and it was so empowering to see that reaction from strangers – even though it wasn’t a positive thing really! I’d keep it shorn but I have little daughters who hated it, loudly. Maybe one day I’ll be allowed my shorn head again! ?

    • Hi Angela,

I love your story. I’m very grateful that the rest of my family loves it as well, especially Paul 😉

In my teenage years, every time something happened in my relationships, I’d change my hair!

Fortunately, I haven’t had anyone being scared of me, but some do look at me a bit strangely.

Here’s to the joy of shaved heads!
